San Diego Guitar Lessons - Guitar FAQs #8:
How can I play without excess string noise?

Playing without excess string noise requires you to focus on both of your hands at the same time. First you'll want to make sure that you're not trying to play so fast as to scramble over notes and make a mess. That means, if you want to have a clean sound you dont want to play sloppy. If you try to play so fast that your fingers can't keep up you'll play sloppy. The next thing you need is proper picking. You'll want to either use palm muting to keep your rhythm guitar sounding clean, or you'll want to use a picking technique called thumb muting to keep your lead guitar sounding clean.
