San Diego Guitar Lessons - Guitar FAQs #4:
How can I improve my songwriting/creativity/improvising skills?

If you want to improve your songwriting, creativity, and improvising skills you'll need to do two things: first, you should stop learning other people's songs. You'll definitely gain some benefit from learning songs but you will make very little progress to improve
your songwriting, creativity, and improvising skills. The ONLY way to improve those skills is to write songs yourself. That means to start playing whatever. It means start writing whatever comes to mind. Just let yourself go and play. If you are just playing other people's songs, you will just play those songs. You'll struggle to come up with things on your own. So take yourself away from other people's music. Try to play along by ear WITHOUT learning
from a tab.. Play along with the singer's voice... Learn music theory and try to play the same song in a different key..
