Lassana Bathily, a Muslim shopworker at the Paris supermarket where a gunman held 19 people hostage last Friday, has been hailed as a national hero after hiding several customers in a walk-in freezer during the siege.
As gunman Amedy Coulibaly entered the Jewish supermarket in eastern Paris on Friday with his guns blazing, staffer Lassana Bathily told a few customers, including one holding a baby, to hide inside a walk-in freezer in the basement. He switched off the cooling system, locked them inside and told them to stay calm.
After escaping from inside the supermarket through a goods lift, police handcuffed Bathily after mistaking him for a suspect, and held him for one and a half hours.
He eventually handed police the key, which allowed them to storm the store without first punching through the shutters.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since thanked Bathily, an immigrant from Mali, for his courage and effort in save the Jewish hostages.
