Kenyan president "very excited" after ICC charges dropped

"Today at The Hague, the prosecutor has dismissed the charges against his Excellency the president..."

From healthy applause to celebrations in the streets - Kenyans reacted to the news that the International Criminal Court in the Hague has withdrawn charges of crimes against humanity against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) KENYAN PRESIDENT UHURU KENYATTA, SAYING:

"I am very keen to run home to my wife right now and tell her what's happening - anyway I am very excited by the way."

Prosecutors say Kenyatta, who had been accused of orchestrating a wave of deadly violence after Kenya's 2007 elections, used his political power to obstruct their investigation, especially since becoming president last year. Kenyatta's lawyers rejected the accusations.
