During the 12th to 17th Century the legend of an immortal Christian king named Prester John circulated around Europe. The initial claims that he was ruling in India were dismissed after hundreds of years of searching throughout Asia. Eventually a group of Portugese explorers thought that they had stumbled across evidence of him in Ethiopia, connecting his Christian kingdom to the Garden of Eden. When the Portugese found and met the Ethiopian monarch they assigned him to be Prester John, although no such man ever existed. Their desire for the fantasy had been finally been fulfilled.
