At least 175 people have been confirmed dead in Bangladesh, after a building housing garment factories collapsed on Wednesday (April 24).

Rescuers searched for survivors overnight as officials fear many are still trapped under the rubble.

More than 1,000 people have been injured.

According to officials, cracks appeared on the building the day before it collapsed.

Warnings not to allow workers into the complex were allegedly ignored.

On Thursday (April 25) relatives were anxious to see if their loved ones were among the victims.

Mainly female employees worked at the factories, which supplied garments to Western companies.

UK retailer Primark says one of its suppliers occupied the second floor of the building.

The disaster raises questions about worker safety and low wages in Bangladesh.

It comes just five months after a fire at another factory left more than 100 people dead.
