IAEA predicts further challenges in Fukushima clean-up

After an eight-day inspection of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency predicts Japan will face further complications in decommissioning the wrecked plant.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, DIRECTOR OFNUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE AND WASTE TECHNOLOGY, JUAN CARLOS LENTIJO, SAYING:

"It is expectable that in such a complex site additional incidents will occur."

The IAEA team came to Japan at the behest of the Japanese government to assess the state of the plant and give their advice for decommissioning.

"This is something that you can define in your plan. But in my view, it will be near impossible to ensure the time for decommissioning such a complex facility in less than 30, 40 years as it is currently established in the roadmap."
