Protesters in New Delhi rally against the kidnap and rape of a five-year-old girl.

Weekend demonstrations continued Sunday in New Delhi outside police headquarters and the hospital where the girl is receiving treatment after being tortured, raped and kept in captivity for 40 hours last week.

Images of police hitting protesters have prompted further outcry.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday condemned the assault and called for sensitivity in dealing with demonstrators.

"The gruesome assault on a little girl a few days back reminds us of the need to work collectively to root out this sort of depravity from our society."

Doctors said the girl's condition was stable and she was alert and talking to her parents.

The suspected attacker is in custody after police arrested him in the eastern state of Bihar and brought him back to New Delhi for interrogation.
