Houses were reduced to rubble and residents were in a daze at China's Qinglongtang village near the epicentre of a 6.6 magnitude which hit the area early on Saturday (April 20).
State media reported at least 71 people were dead and 2,200 injured in the tremor which occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT). Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan county where the epicentre is located. Water and electricity have been cut off in that area, state media said.
Tents were set up in the compound of the People's Hospital of Lushan county to serve as emergency facilities due to fear of aftershocks, CCTV said.
The injured were being brought by ambulance from across the county, it added.
Television footage showed people holding up quits or umbrellas to provide shade for the injured who lay on the ground.
