Sandstorms hit parts of China's northwestern Xinjiang region on Tuesday (April 16), state media reported.

Official state television CCTV showed footage from multiple cities in Xinjiang where traffic was enveloped in a reddish cloud of dust.

State-run news agency Xinhua said a cold front brought on the storm that blew sand from Xinjiang's deserts into the cities.

CCTV said visibility was reduced to less than 30 metres (98 feet).

Xinhua, quoting China's National Meteorological Centre said that the sandstorms will last through Thursday (April 18), adding that the affected areas will include other provinces of central and western China.
