Rebels in Syria tackle new ground in the east

Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show members of the Free Syrian Army as they move in on the eastern town of Qamishli for the first time in more than two years of conflict.

The town close to both the Turkish and Iraqi borders is largely Christian and Kurdish.

Rights groups say peace was forged because local Kurds agreed with mostly Arab rebels to avoid clashes within city limits.

The city of around 200,000 people is also home to thousands of Syrians who have fled other parts of the country, in a war that has already killed more than 70,000 people.
