Full Story:

Representatives from 55 countries, including the foreign ministers of Indonesia and Australia, attended an international conference on people smuggling on Tuesday.

Ten United Nations agencies and more than 200 delegates attended the meeting.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa called for cooperation for better prevention of people smuggling.

[Marty Natalegawa, Indonesia Foreign Minister]:
"Early detection will also enable the country of origin to prevent irregular migrations taking place, it will enable the countries of transit to prepare proper steps and measures."

During the conference, delegates from Indonesia and Australia also sought to improve intelligence sharing and improve cooperation on border issues.

[Bob Carr, Australia Foreign Minister]:
"Two years ago members agreed to set the Bali Process on a path towards achieving a more collaborative approach to dealing with people smuggling and trafficking in persons. We agreed to framework the regional cooperation and we set senior officials the task of implementing that framework."

An independent report into asylum policy last year found around 1,000 people have died making the voyage from Indonesia to Australia's Christmas Island since 2001.

The conference is expected to produce a non-binding document with recommendations including strong national legislation to criminalise people smuggling and trafficking.
