Kerry and Peres speak of peace in Jerusalem

STORY: US Secretary of State John Kerry held talks with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Monday.

Kerry was welcomed by Peres at the Presidential residence in the Holy City, signed the guest book and sat down to make brief statements for the media before continuing his meeting behind closed doors.

The Israeli President said that he believed the new Israeli government together with the support of the re-elected US leadership gave a sense of optimism to the stalled peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

"I believe that the gaps between us and our Palestinian neighbors can be bridged, and I speak out of experience. There may be some setbacks but the whole picture is a picture of progress," Peres said.

The US Secretary of State said that he understood the the Israeli President wanted peace, because of the significance of their meeting on Holocaust Memorial Day.
