Samoa's parliament is debating how to deal with the country's stray dog problem.
Some politicians have suggested to slaughter the animals and export their meat.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) ASSOCIATE EDUCATION MINISTER TOLEAFOA FAAFISI, SAYING:
"We can use the meat as food or something else like a sausage."
But his enthusiasm for canning man's best friend was not universally shared on the streets.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED SAMOAN SAYING:
"No it shouldn't even be encouraged at all."
The leader of Samoa's opposition has joined the calls for strays in town to be put down, but the police minister says it would be inhumane to walk into the market and just start shooting them.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLICE MINISTER SALA FATA PINATI SAYING:
"We are closely working with the animal protection society."
Samoa passed a law earlier this year requiring dog owners to licence their animals.
