Following the shooting of Switzerland’s only wild bear, which was considered a risk to human safety, the Swiss are questioning whether bears can survive here. It’s an important question because more are expected to arrive. The 3 year-old « problem » bear M13 was shot in February after it proved impossible to keep him away from human settlements. It followed the shooting of another bear, JJ3, in 2008 for the same reasons. The authorities would like to prevent future Swiss bears from suffering the same fate, but they say this will only be possible if farmers and residents in border areas change their behavior towards the wild animals.
