Nelson Mandela "making further progress" in hospital

Against a backdrop of prayers and song, South African presidential spokesman says former President Nelson Mandela, is "making further progress", as he is treated in hospital for pneumonia.

Mandela, widely known by his clan name Madiba, is due to spend a fifth day in hospital.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENCY SPOKESPERSON MAC MAHARAJ, SAYING:

"Former President Nelson Mandela had a restful day and continues to receive treatment. The government is satisfied that the doctors are providing the former president with the best possible medical care to enable Madiba to recover and to do so in comfort. They have also reported further improvement by Madiba in his condition."

Churches across the nation held Easter prayers for the recovery of the 94-year-old.

At the Regina Mundi church in Soweto, once a focal point of the fight against racial segregation, several hundred people gathered to pay homage to the Nobel Prize win
