ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Hundreds of migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa on Thursday and Friday (March 28, 29).
An Italian coastguard video showed around 260 migrants traveling on three separate boats. They were intercepted by coastguard officials and most appeared to be of African origin.
The migrants were taken to a holding center on the island of Lampedusa, which is the southernmost part of Italy. Tunisia is the closest landfall to Lampedusa and is about 113 kilometers (70 miles) away.
It's thought improved weather conditions and calmer seas have prompted the migrants to travel.
