A unit of Chinese missile destroyers conducted live-fire training in the South China Sea recently, as tensions with neighbours over disputed islands remain high.
The drill, simulating assaults from hostile vessels, was aimed at testing the unit's capabilities of countering air raids and electromagnetic interference and staging missile attacks, state television CCTV said.
China is involved in long-running disputes with Vietnam and Taiwan about ownership of the South China Sea and its myriad, mostly uninhabited, islands and atolls. The Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei also have claims.
