Lawyers for the man accused of a shooting rampage in Colorado have offered prosecutors a plea deal.

James Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 at a movie theatre last July.

The attack is one of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history.

Defence lawyers for the 25-year-old say he's willing to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison.

The move would spare him the death penalty.

According to court papers, prosecutors have not yet responded to the offer.

Holmes is due in court on Monday (April 1).
