A study links sugary drink to thousands of deaths.

A new study on international consumption of sugary drinks found that in 2010 more than 180 thousand deaths could be linked to drinking too many sweetened beverages.

According to the research, 25 thousand of those deaths were in the Untied States.

The researchers used data from the World Health Organization’s Global Burden of Disease Study from 2010.

Mexico led the rest of the world in consumption of sweetened drinks and obesity related deaths from drinking sweetened beverages.

Japan had the least amount of deaths connected to sweetened drinks, along with one of the lowest consumption rates of sweetened drinks in the world.

The deaths reported in the study were directly caused by various conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which are related to obesity.

A statement from the American Beverage Association said that the claims of the study were unfounded.

They state that “the researchers make a huge leap when they take beverage intake calculations from around the globe and allege that those beverages are the cause of deaths which the authors themselves acknowledge are due to chronic disease."

What do you think? Is it dangerous to consume too many sweetened drinks?
