When my parents were aging and failing, my sister and I rendered long-term care in their home for a period of five years. As children, we tend to make that promise but we have no idea the enormity of the undertaking when we do so. But the rules that applied back then were simply horrible; you spend everything that the parents had on their care, and if they had further care needs, you sold the home, if their was a community spouse and they both were not in care, and there wasn't sufficient income to support it, then they could apply for welfare. This is still the law of the state of Connecticut -- unless you can get qualified for Title 19. People say that Title 19 and Medicaid are a horrible thing, but it is such an improvement in the law over what we used to have to deal with.
