What was happening in the world one hundred years ago? Hi this is Matt and here are 5 New York Times headlines from March 14th, 1913.
Number 5 – Here is an unusual bit of news that you probably won’t come across today. The then Secretary of the Interior was given the title of “Lone Chief” by an Indian tribe. The report noted that, “Indians from Montana called to give him a pipe of peace and a buckskin tobacco bag.”
Number 4 – Marital issues in 1913 were no different than what we see today. Sadly a Brooklyn art instructor was divorcing his wife and all the dirty laundry was coming out. She called him “stingy” and “old pill” and he claimed that, “she was not the loving and affectionate wife he expected to find her.”
Number 3 – Your 21st century watch may have all the bells and whistles but I bet it is not as ornate as what you would find in 1913. Referred to as a time piece, you could get a fancy Waltham watch for as low as $5.
Number 2 - We may have had a rough winter in the northeast this year but back in 1913, they had a mild winter. Consequently, the local officials were encouraging travel as roads had not been damaged by extreme weather. For New York City folks, the recommended trip was from “Broadway to Yonkers, along the Hudson to Dobbs Ferry, then through Ardsley to White Plains, the county seat of Westchester.”
Number 1 – Daredevils exists today and they existed a hundred years ago as well. Rodman Law was a thrill seeker who used to do parachute dives from skyscrapers. This time he seemed to have gone too far as he tried to jump from a building using his steel rocket. It was disastrous and he got burned in the process. People noticed “his clothes, torn and covered in mud and blackened with powder.”
