Hundreds of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican eagerly anticipate the election of the new pope.
If white smoke rises from the Sistine Chapel it would signal that a new pontiff has been selected.
So far though, only black smoke has risen, indicating that the conclave's elections have so far proved inconclusive.
The process began on Tuesday evening, with two morning and two afternoon votes on Wednesday.
Despite not seeing the white smoke they had hoped for, visitors said they felt a positive outcome would come soon.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. TOURIST MATT WESTOVER FROM BOSTON:
"Well they didn't select the pope so hopefully they'll do it tonight so we'll come back tonight, at seven o'clock to see if the smoke is white."
(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) PILGRIM SILVIA FROM GERMANY:
"I am very moved, I can't wait to see the new pope who will unite the whole world."
