A fire burned a huge amount of raw cotton in Hassakah city, northern Syria on Thursday (March 7).

Syrian state television showed thick smoke emanating from the site and the fire raging through huge piles of cotton bags.

Rescue workers eventually brought the fire under control. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Syrian television said the fire caused a loss of more than two billion Syrian pounds ($20 million).
