China opens NPC parliament session

Over 2,000 delegates from across China gathered on Tuesday (March 5) in the Great Hall of the People for the opening of this year's National People's Congress (NPC) parliament session.

Security was high in and around Tiananmen Square as it geared up for Congress which will see Xi Jinping take the reins from outgoing President Hu Jintao.

The various delegates included CEOs, generals, political leaders and Tibetan monks, as well as some of China's richest businessmen.

China, facing a potential slowdown of growth, said on Monday (March 4) it would boost fiscal spending in 2013 in a bid to deliver economic growth of 7.5 percent for the year.
