Iraqi finance minister calls it quits

Sunnis gather for prayer in Iraq amid ongoing discontent over their treatment by a Shiite-led government.

The country's precarious sectarian balance is coming under growing strain as Sunnis have taken to the streets calling for the Prime Minister to quit.

Now the Sunni Finance Minister Rafaie al-Esawi is tendering his resignation.

(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) IRAQ'S FINANCE MINISTER RAFAIE AL-ESAWI, SAYING:

"I announce my resignation from the government, which shed the blood of Iraqis and killed a number of martyrs in Falluja and which has not taken any measure until today against the murderers who killed our sons in Falluja. I do not want to be part of this government. I have been a representative of my people in the last elections and I went to Baghdad with their authorisation and I am giving them back the authorisation today in front of this protest. I won't be part of a government that can not represent its people."
