What was happening in the world one hundred years ago? Hi this is Matt and here are 5 New York Times headlines from February 28th, 1913.
Number 5 - War clouds were gathering and militaries around the world were beefing up. Not to be left behind was the French military which sought a hundred million dollars for expansion. And Germany was going to spend 50 million dollars additional. In today's money value terms, we are talking billions of dollars. And not too long after such buildouts, the first world war started on 28th July, 1914.
Number 4 - If you really want to see what it was like to dine at a fancy restaurant in 1913, here's a great visual. Social elites, formally dressed, gathered at the Savoy Restaurant on Sunday evening.
Number 3 - So how did they sell you telephones in those days? Simple - you just 'lift the latch'. It further noted - 'Whenever you want to reach anyone, anywhere, any time, why not use the quickest and most economical route? And this was well before mobile phones, button-based dialing, heck - even rotary dialing!
Number 2 - Wedding is a joyous occasion but joy can also be deadly as was the case for a 105-year-old bride who died 5 days after her wedding. The report noted 'she had triumphed over the objections of her relatives and won the consent of the courts to become the bride of the man who for fifty years had been her sweatheart'.
Number 1 - It was still early days for automobiles in 1913. A truck driver ended up killing someone due to a bizarre limitation. His visibility was limited since he was 'driving in the semi-darkness with a leather windshield in front of him.'
