Jails are usually not considered places where you would want to be… unless you’re in the Netherlands. Located in the historic center of Roermond is a luxury hotel that once served as a jail.

The detention center originally opened in 1862 but it was later abandoned. The prison reopened in 2002, serving a facility for body stuffers.

Roughly 5 years later, the building was shut down yet again. Shortly after the jail closing, the hotel construction began.

Facilities include a sauna and gym. The rooms also come with free Wi-Fi and flat screen televisions.

An in-house restaurant offers gourmet meals and an upscale bar sells beverages and snacks to guests. Staff is available 24/7. Visitors can schedule a tour and rent a car or bike right from the hotel.

Hotel authorities state that the suites are “located in the former warden chambers and sports area of the former prison.” All of the décor is streamlined and modern, giving the interior a twist from the building’s historic roots.

The suite names reflect the previous jail workers, the ones who carried out their jobs in that same spot. Guests have a choice rooms that are called ‘The Director’, ‘The Jailer’, ‘The Judge’ or ‘The Lawyer’.
