At least five private security guards stood outside the concrete walls of Arnold Pistorius, the runner's uncle, keeping reporters at bay.

The court fixed bail at one million rand or $113,000.

Under the terms of his bail, Pistorius, 26, was also ordered to hand over firearms and his two South African passports, avoid his home and all witnesses, report to a police station twice a week and abstain from drinking alcohol.

The decision followed a week of dramatic testimony about how the athlete was said to have shot dead model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp at his luxury home near Pretoria in the early hours of February 14.
