A Gandhi letter for freedom sells at an auction.
Recently, a letter written by Mahatma Gandhi sold for more than $175,000.
Gandhi had typed the letter when he was detained by British troops in India. The document which was labeled “Detention Camp, October 26th 1943”, contained Gandhi’s heartfelt plea for freedom for himself and his followers.
The letter sold at an auction in Ludlow, United Kingdom. It was only expected to fetch between $15,000 and $23,000. An expert at the auction house believes the sale price sets a “world record figure" for a letter written by the Indian leader.
The previous owner was an elderly man who decided to part with the piece to provide for his family.
Last year, rare Gandhi artifacts sold at an auction. Dirt and grass blades from the leader’s assassination site sold for over $15,000. A drop of Gandhi’s blood was in the box that contained the soil and grass.
A pair of his glasses fetched more than $50,000 along with other seemingly small items that took in tens of thousands of dollars. The entire Gandhi collection sold for nearly $200,000.
