Number 5 - The biggest story on the day was the tragic outcome from an expedition to reach the South Pole. A great British Navy explorer and navy officer led his crew to the South Pole but they all died on the way back home due to starvation and extreme cold. Scott and his crew wanted to be the first humans to reach the Geographic South Pole but a Norwegian crew beat them by 34 days.
Number 4 – A group of African Americans gathered to celebrate 50 years of emanicipation. A meeting, arranged by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People featured Mrs. Fanny Garrison Villard as a speaker.
Number 3 – Fashion magazine, Vogue released an ad, urging women to buy a copy of their ‘Forecast for Spring Fashion', before spending a cent on clothing. It read, “To buy Vogue is clothes insurance”.
Number 2 - Thomas Edison celebrated his 66th birthday. He worked for a good portion of the day but quit early enough to keep his wife happy, which allowed him to attend a family dinner party. Edison stated “I feel like 25.”
Number 1 – Niagara Falls has abundant water today. In 1913, Niagara Falls was practically dry. Due to the formation of an ice dam above Goat Island, water was forced to the Canadian side, leaving only three tiny streams trickling down the American falls.
