What was happening in the world one hundred years ago?
Hi this is Matt and here are 5 New York Times headlines from February 12th, 1913.
Number 5 - If you were a woman, living in the United States in 1913, life was much different. For instance, you did not have voting rights. However, Dr. Anna Shaw was predicting in a report on February 12th that woman would get those rights by 1920. Remarkably, that's exactly what happened as the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920 allowed women to do so.
Number 4 - Dean Summer of Chicago had some strong opinions on conditions for marriage. He wanted everyone to present a medical certificate before saying their 'I dos'. Part of his justification was that it would lead to healthier future generations as already there are too many people in medical institutions. In his words 'Is it any wonder we are building each year more and more insane asylums, penitentiaries, hospitals, and these out of proportion to the increase in population?'
Number 3 - Looking for a new place in 1913 but didn't want buy? You were in luck as Berkeley Arms on West 95th Street in Manhattan had 5, 6, 7 room apartment rentals going from $50 to $75.
Number 2 - Some light snow fall in Brooklyn had brought out the kids on bobsleds. However, some kids realized the dangers of that activity when a bobsled hit a car. Thankfully, noone was seriously injured and 2 of the kids required some medical attention. As the report noted, 'All of the children were thrown off into the road' and those with injuries were taken to the Swedish hospital.
Number 1 - In another example of how a woman's life was different at the time, you could not take part in the Presidential inauguration parades. President Wilson's inauguration was coming up soon and it was re-affirmed that women were not permitted in the parade.
