Jesus, sun and shield art thou - Chris Lawton at St Mary's Church, Shephall, Stevenage

2013-02-17 4

Me playing the organ at St Mary's Church in Shephall, Stevenage.

The organ was originally built in the 1950s for Royston Methodist Church, Cambridgeshire by the John Compton Organ Company Ltd and is the 'Miniatura A' model consisting of 2 fully enclosed ranks of pipes - Diapason and Rohr Gedackt. In the late 1970s, the organ was moved here to St Mary's where it replaced a single manual Walker instrument. The detached stopkey console is located at the front of the church behind the left hand choir stalls with the pipework situated at the rear. The organ is happily in the same condition as built with the following specification:

PEDAL
Bourdon 16'
Flute 8'
Great to Pedal
Swell to Pedal

GREAT
Open Diapason 8'
Rohr Gedeckt 8'
Principal 4'
Fifteenth 2'

SWELL
Open Diapason 8'
Rohr Gedeckt 8'
Flute 4'
Piccolo 2'

For this first video I am playing the hymn 'Jesus, sun and shield art thou' to the tune 'Coldrey'.

Many thanks to the church officials and vicar for allowing me access to this little gem of a Compton organ and for making me so welcome.

NOTE: this is purely my interest in order to make sure that these fine organs are archived forever and I do not make any monetary profit by this video being on dailymotion.

REQUEST: I am always on the lookout for Compton organs to play - particularly electrones - so if you know of any churches which still have these then please do let me know. I will happily give a donation or pay any applicable room hire charge.
