Three Colombian police officers were killed by FARC rebels Friday when their vehicle was ambushed in the northern Colombian state of La Guajira.

The rebels fired on the officers with long-range weapons and then left an explosives-packed vehicle next to their bodies.

The attack came just hours after the Colombian government announced it had killed a brigade commander in an airstrike on a FARC camp.

Violence has intensified since a two-month unilateral ceasefire expired on January 20.

Six rebels and five soldiers have been killed in the last week.
