A Statue Dedicated to Chickens Stirs Controversy

Officials oppose a statue dedicated to chickens.

Monuments usually depict notable human events and figures from the past. Well, a Facebook campaign was launched by people who wished to install a statue dubbed 'Chicken of the East' in Ditchingham, United Kingdom.

In the past, roughly 300 chickens freely sauntered around a roundabout, but they slowly dwindled away. The proposal to erect a statue on the roundabout was strongly opposed by council authorities. Officials refused to support the campaign citing a safety hazard, as they believed it would serve as a distraction to drivers.

80-year-old, Gordon Knowles fed the chickens for many years and he would like to see a memorial put up. He states “I've never known of an accident caused by a chicken. They put Ditchingham on the map and they're known all over the world."

Last year, a woman from Irvine wrote a letter to city officials, asking on the behalf of PETA to install a sign as a memorial to hundreds of fish that were killed. A vehicular crash occurred when a big rig truck carrying 1,600 pounds of live fish and several tanks of oxygen collided with two other vehicles.

The proposal was rejected as a city spokesperson claimed that there were no plans to erect a fish memorial.
