The Algerian state news agency is reporting that the military operation to free hostages at this gas facility has ended. Details about the outcome are still not unavailable but British Prime Minister David Cameron had this to say.
SOUNDBITE: British Prime Minsiter David Cameron saying:
"We face a very bad situation at this BP gas compound in Algeria. A number of British citizens have been taken hostage; already we know of one that has died. It is a very dangerous, very uncertain, very fluid situation. I think we have to prepare ourselves for the possibility of bad news ahead."
Cameron canceled a much anticipated speech in the Netherlands to monitor the situation at the plant which is a joint operation between the BP, Norway and the Algerian government.
Islamist fighters said they attacked the facility in response to French military action against rebels in Mali.

"This situation will be resolved we hope with a minimum loss of life but when you deal with these relentless terrorists, life is not any way precious to them."
Reports about the number of casualties at the plant have not been confirmed.
