The Steubeville Case
In August 2012, two members of the school's football team were indicted for drugged sexual abuse of a minor in a case that garnered nationwide attention after it was prominently covered in the New York Times, in part for the role of social media in its development. On December 24, following national newspaper coverage, hacker collective Anonymous threatened to reveal the names of other unindicted alleged participants. KnightSec, an offshoot of Anonymous, hacked an unaffiliated website in December 2012 and demanded an apology. They were angry over an alleged cover-up by school officials and local authorities in order to protect the athletes and posted a video online on January 1, 2013 of students ridiculing the incident that occurred the same night on August 11. There are allegations more people participated in the incident.
On December 15, 2012, it was reported that two 16-year-old boys are set for trial on February 13 in juvenile court in Steubenville on charges that they drugged and abused a 16-year-old girl in August. Their attorneys have denied the charges.
