Breeding Newts Delay Shopping Center Construction

A shopping development is delayed due to newt breeding.

Eager shoppers in York, United Kingdom are being forced to wait for their favorite stores to open.

The new development, dubbed, Monks Cross was recently put on hold due to an expanding population of newts.

The great crested newt population had previously been less than nine in the area, but due to the wet summer, that number increased to 300.

These dark amphibians with spotted sides are protected by law.

Construction crews were originally slated to begin working in January, but the plans have changed since the newts will have to be rehomed before work can begin. The amphibians will have to be caught individually and relocated to a local, specially created wetland habitat.

Last year, the appearance of a rare species of spider shut down a multimillion dollar construction project planned for a highway in San Antonio, Texas.

The Braken Bat Cave meshweaver hadn't been spotted in about 30 years, so the United States Fish and Wildlife Service joined forces with the Federal Highway Administration to figure out how the project could go ahead without destroying the spider's possible habitat.
