Rita Levi-Montalcini, an Italian neurologist who defied Fascist anti-Semitic persecution to conduct research and went on to win a Nobel Prize, has died in Rome at the age of 103.

Her study of cells helped improve understanding of conditions such as tumours and senile dementia.
