Complaint Filed Over Gender Segregation Classes

A complain has been filed over gender separation classes.

Can you imagine going to school where there are separate classrooms for boys and girls?

The American Civil Liberties Union has asked the United States Department of Education to look into gender-based segregation in Alabama’s Huffman Middle School and another school in Idaho.

The group calls the classes ‘unlawful’. These single-sex classes at the Alabama middle school began in 2010 and continue to take place.

Students wanting to be placed in coeducational rooms are forced to transfer to a different school. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed an official complaint, claiming the segregated classes “draw on stereotypes that men are active and independent while women are passive and dependent”.

According to that complaint, boys are seated shoulder to shoulder while the females are placed in face to face seating arrangements. The theory is that males should not have to make eye contact, as they are more competitive than girls.

What do you think, is separating boys from girls starting kids off on the wrong foot?
