Thousands of Thais in yellow shirts packed the area surrounding Bangkok's Anantasamakom Throne Hall on Wednesday (December 5) to mark 85th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Yellow is the colour for Monday, the day on which the monarch was born.
Local media reports estimated that around 200,000 people turned out in the capital, Bangkok. Many lined the route from Siriraj hospital where the king has lived since September 2009 because of illness.
There were chants of: "Long live the King". Some well-wishers had camped out overnight to get a glimpse of monarch.
King Bhumipol, the ninth King in the Ratanakosin dynasty, came to the throne in 1946, is the world's longest-reigning monarch. He is respected by most Thais for is efforts to help eradicate poverty.
The King is revered by many of his subjects because he is seen as a unifying figure in a nation that has seen often-violent political upheaval in recent years.
