2012-12-04 61

A volcano in Russia's Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has erupted for the first time in 36 years.

Polsky Tolbachik began spewing a column of ash seven kilometres into the atmosphere.

A volcanic ash cloud formed and is drifting to the northwest as lava flows down the volcano's southern slope.

The eruption poses no threat to the local population.
