Hundreds march for climate change in Doha

Hundreds of activists take to the streets of Doha, Qatar.

They're demanding urgent action over climate change and rising global temperatures.

Their demonstration takes place as more than 200 nations meet in the city to discuss the Kyoto Protocol.

They want to extend the deadline that legally binds countries to lower gas emissions.

But few believe the nations will be able to agree before the protocol expires at the end of the year.

Protesters here want more effort before the summit ends on December 7.

SOUNDBITE: South African World Wildlife Fund Activist, Tesnim Eshab, saying (English):

"We are witnessing climate events already and so we want from the political leaders to take note of what the people are demanding of them."

Greenhouse gas emissions hit record highs in 2011, despite the global economic slowdown and promises for emissions cuts.

Marchers are hoping for policies that promote renewable energies over fossil fuels, an end to nuclear power and plant-based diets.

Some also called for greater migrant worker rights ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which Qatar is set to host.
