Tourists brave floods in Venice

Water in Venice rose to 103 centimetres above sea level on Wednesday - flooding St. Mark's Square and nearby tourist areas.

The levels aren't as high as recent floods - but still forced people here to make use of raised walkways - or brave the waters with rubber boots.

Many bars and cafes in the area are still operating - their chairs half submerged.

A fresh peak of 130 centimetres was expected late on Wednesday, as strong southeasterly winds continue to blow across The Floating City.

Much of Italy has been battered recently by strong winds and heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding.
