Grand Theft Auto throws dagger through the heart of Call of Duty, day one sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops II released, and PlayStation Vita’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified creeps into criticism warfare, THIS IS NICK’S GAMING VIEW!
Hello everyone and welcome to Nick’s Gaming View, you are here with your host, Nick McCandless. Rockstar Games, the developer behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, recently gave a blow to franchises such as Call of Duty by stating “We could easily have churned out a new version year after year without really progressing as a franchise but if we did that eventually the fans would lose interest.” Such comment certainly earns a lot of respect from me, especially hearing and seeing its impact implemented within Grand Theft Auto V, but based on the day one sales figures of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, it’s hard to blame Activision.
Becoming the most successful day one video game launch in history, Activision’s Call of Duty Black Ops II sold over a staggering eight million copies worldwide within the first 24 hours of its launch once again shattering entertainment records. While I agree with Rockstar Games on the fact that any title outside of a sports release should release on a less regular basis, if you were cashing in on a percentage of Call of Duty’s profits, would you change things up? I doubt it!
Wrapping up Nick’s Gaming View, while feedback on Black Ops II has been pretty solid and many gamers have given it the title of “Best Call of Duty Release”, its Vita counterpart, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, has experienced the wrath of criticism. With many gamers completing the single player campaign in less than a hour and the title’s visuals being torn to shreds, you would have thought Activision would have attempted to strengthen or at least maintain the Call of Duty brand, but its clear that this was never a priority.
