Devocalizing of Dogs Stirs Controversy

Animal activists are in an uproar over dog devocalizing procedures.

In this day and age, pets have become true members of the family. But not all dogs and cats are pampered.

Some procedures are ruffling the feathers of animal activists. One of them is devocalizing, a surgical procedure to remove the animal’s voice box so they can no longer bark or make loud noises.

While the operation is not as common these days, some dog owners still have it done, due to annoyance or as a last resort to keep their companion after eviction warnings or such. Several activists have joined forces, calling the practice “horrible and horrific” and suggest it takes away the animals ‘natural ability to communicate and can impair breathing and eating’.

They are asking the American Veterinary Medical Association to ban the procedure. While some veterinarians absolutely refuse to devocalize, others have a different way of thinking.

Some advocates of the procedure claim that it is a simple surgery which is rarely executed. It also doesn’t pose any health risk to the dog. A Boston breeder told NBC news “It’s giving a tool to someone who really loves their animal and is at the end of their rope.”

Do you think devocalizing is ok?
