Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi attended the convocation of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and laid foundation stone of its new building at her Parliament constituency, Raebareli.
Sonia Gandhi said “Since centuries past and until the present date foreign traders and designers have looked to India for the skills of its craft persons, and sumptuousness of its styles and jewelry. This is a heritage that is truly unparallel in its beauty, in its richness and diversity even as you use and interpret it in innovative and contemporary ways”. The Congress President went on to say “I hope you will collaborate closely with our superbly gifted craftsmen and weavers helping to revive their skills and improve their livelihoods even as you learn from the works of international fashion designers. By drawing on our own roots and traditions and yet been open to creative influences from everywhere in the world you can give Indian fashion a unique identity and style that is recognized and admired all over the world”.
