Seventeen injured in Quebec explosion

An explosion at an industrial plant in Sherbrooke, Quebec injured 17 people on Thursday (November 8) - five with serious burns. One person was airlifted to Montreal for treatment, according to a spokesperson with the Sherbrooke University Hospital Centre.

All 65 employees had been accounted for, a fire department spokesperson said.

The explosion occurred at 1830GMT (1330EST) at Neptune Technologies. The blast sparked a fire at the site and thick black smoke filled the air.

The facility kept 15,000 litres of acetone in reserve.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blast.
