17th Street Northwest in Washington DC was packed with onlookers Thursday night...
They came out to watch the city's annual High Heel race...a yearly event where drag queens race down the street in high heels and flamboyant costumes.
Like most things in Washington, this year's event had some political undertones.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PARADE PARTICIPANTS, THE UNICORNS, SAYING:
UNICORN 1- "We are the swing"
UNICORN 2- "Anyone who's considered the Pegasus Unicorn of lobby, so, I think we are going to play an important role in Ohio, so we'll see how it goes."
UNICORN 1- "Yes, yes."
(SOUNDBITE) (English) EMPEROR ONE, FIDEL MORIN, SAYING:
"It is a very interesting one, you know, Barack Obama has done quite a bit for gay rights and for equality. I'm truly afraid that if we go with Romney that we might go back a few steps."
After rallying the crowds, they were off. The winner pasted the finish line breathless.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) RACE WINNER, WILLIAM DENISE, SAYING:
"From the start it was tough, there were tripping people, there were rocks everywhere, but I new if I got a good start I will be able to carry it to the end."
Although this year's event was delayed due to Sandy, the storm didn't seem to damper the spirit of the event.
