Muslim Rohingya wade through the water towards a refugee camp in western Myanmar.
They managed to escape six days of sectarian violence in their home Rahkine state where they say Buddhist villagers were attacking them as police watched on.
Scared and possessionless, one woman describes her ordeal.
(SOUNDBITE) (Burmese) ROHINGYA REFUGEE, ZOMILLAH, SAYING;
"They came to attack us with knives. They set fire to our home but we have nothing left for them. I left in only the clothes I'm wearing. I don't even have shoes."
The United Nations says nearly 23,000 people have been displaced due to the unrest between Muslim Rohingyas and Buddhist Rakhines.
Here at the refugee camp, already at full capacity with displaced people from violence earlier this year, women and children await food handouts.
The Rohingya have long demanded recognition as an indigenous ethnic group but the government regards them as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government, meanwhile, has refused to grant them refugee status.
The United Nations calls them virtually friendless.
At least 84 people have been killed in the latest round of violence, although human rights groups say that number is likely to rise.
